Open Source & Frontier Intelligence Symbiosis
Box CEO Aaron Levie: Frontier intelligence will remain at the forefront of solving brand-new use cases and orchestrating complex workflows. As use cases mature in the enterprise, tokens can peel off to lower-cost models or task-specific ones. This process runs forever — spend and token volume for both approaches will go up for years. The applied AI layer is key: it can evaluate workflows, choose model mixtures, and eventually train its own models.

The Ultimate Test for Coding AI
Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch asks: Is software getting better? My ability to influence productivity has radically increased. I feel agency and autonomy I never had before. Personal software is real. At Vercel, our CTO built industry-impacting software nearly autonomously with agents. PMs ship software, juniors and interns ship quality code at scale. But the ultimate jury is whether users love the product, expand usage, and refer friends. That is the main metric he watches.

The End of 996 & Parallel Agents
Linear Head of Product Nan Yu reflects: at age 20, my biggest advantage was slamming unbelievable hours into work. But looking back, those hours were mostly tedious programming tasks now largely automated. 996 still has uses but is not as universally effective. The biggest change for early-stage startups: you can do way more in parallel because of agents. Brute force hours are being replaced by agent parallelism.

Conference Talks Massively Underrated
Zara Zhang recommended three must-watch AI conference talk collections: AI Engineer Summit, Cursor Compile, and Figma Config. She noted these high-quality talks are freely available online (conference tickets often cost hundreds of dollars), yet most videos only get tens of thousands of views. Watching on YouTube is arguably better than in-person: no bad audio, no crowd blocking the screen, no distractions, and you can pause to take notes. 535 likes, 68 retweets.

Building a School Where AI Models Learn About Humanity
AI & I by Every · Dan Shipper 对话 Edwin
Key Themes
Edwin frames AI training as "building a school for AGI" — models arrive unformed like children and must learn everything from basic arithmetic to taste, poetry and beauty. Surge reached about USD 1 billion in revenue without VC funding. Topics: math capability leap from GSM8K to Riemann, AI should optimize for human growth not engagement, data environments as the new training paradigm, the delegation vs. autonomy balance, and AGI timeline (Fields Medal/Nobel level within 5 years).

School for AGI
Edwin proposes a profound metaphor: Surge is building a school for AGI. Models arrive unformed like children and need systematic education from "preschool" to "college." Different stages teach different things — from basic arithmetic to taste, poetry, and beauty. It is not just skill progression but a qualitative leap.
GSM8K → RiemannMath Leap: GSM8K to Riemann
A few years ago AI barely scored 20% on middle-school math. Now models solve IMO problems and break through at research-level math — OpenAI recently disproved an Erdos conjecture using algebraic geometry. Fields Medalist Timothy Gowers was both amazed and "relieved" — meaning human mathematicians still have unique value for another year or two. But Edwin believes AI will eventually surpass everything humans can do.
AI Should Push Back
Edwin sharply observes that many AI models are optimized for engagement — longer sessions, more dwell time. They will never end a conversation. He shared being "tricked" by a model using BuzzFeed-style clickbait like "Want to know one weird trick locals do?" Truly good AI should push back like the new Claude, saying "Stop it, ship the email" — helping humans grow and be efficient, not get addicted.
Data Environments Paradigm
The data industry is shifting from collecting interesting datasets to building environments. As models become more agentic (accessing tools, docs, browsers), training in real-world environments becomes critical. A fascinating discovery: training models on non-coding environments still improved their coding significantly — because the model learned generalized instruction-following, tool use, and document understanding, highly analogous to unit testing and iteration in programming.

AGI Within 5 Years
Edwin firmly believes in scaling laws. His AGI bar: automating the work of an average engineer, publishing increasingly novel scientific research accepted by top journals, winning a Fields Medal or Nobel Prize — he sees this happening within five years. "If you think about that very deeply, you have to worry about what that means for humanity. What is the role of humanity in the universe?"
The Delegation Paradox
他引用 Ted Chiang 的科幻小说《What is Expected of Us》:"尽管你知道自由意志不存在,但假装它存在是必要的。
Dan Shipper raised the "delegation paradox": the more you delegate, the more human capability atrophies — like driving instead of walking causing muscle loss. Edwin acknowledges there is a time for both, but warns against mindless delegation. He quotes Ted Chiang: "You have to pretend that you have free will. We must consciously choose to prove things on our own, to write on our own, to create on our own — because preserving our humanity is valuable in and of itself, even if the output is not optimal."

The Bootstrapped Unicorn
Edwin built Surge into a "sneaky giant" — reaching about USD 1 billion in revenue without any VC funding. Without investor pressure, Surge avoids the Silicon Valley "short-term optimization trap": no monthly board deck showing growth numbers, no optimizing for the next funding round. This lets them truly think about what is best for the company and industry long-term — designing AI that makes humans better, not more addicted.
Optimize for Humanity, Not Engagement
Edwin contrasts two product paths: one optimized for "keeping you on the site" like certain social media; another like what Facebook could have been — recommending restaurants and movies to enjoy with friends, encouraging real-world connections. AI faces the same choice: become another addictive social media, or become a tool that helps you grow and encourages you to create yourself. He warns about internal tension at AI companies: researchers want to advance capability, PMs need measurable metrics. "Session length" and "users" are easy to measure; "improving human lives" is much harder and longer-term.
